If you are between the ages of 16 and 18, you cannot work more than eight hours in any 24-hour period or more than 40 hours per week. You are entitled to a 30-minute break if you work more than four and a half hours. If you`re under 18 and thinking about finding a job, or if you`re already working, there are some restrictions on what work you can do, where you can do it, and how long per week. In general, young people under the age of 16 can take up part-time employment from the age of 14. However, they can only be used in so-called “light work”. This means that they cannot perform work that could affect their health and safety or their education. There are rules that govern the hours of the day and the duration of your work. These differ according to age. Applying for jobs and interviewing may sound scary, but there`s a lot of help out there. First, think about what you want from your job. Is it just to make money while studying, or are you looking for a future career? How much money do you ideally need to earn? Once you have an idea of the type of work you want, it`s easier to start searching.
If you are asked to work too long or if you are not, you can get help from acas. It is a publicly funded organization whose job is to help resolve conflicts in the workplace. They will help you decide what to do, for example by making a complaint to the Health and Safety Executive or your local council. If this is your first job, you will not have pages of work experience. And that`s okay. Instead, write a page describing what you`re studying, your skills, and any relevant experience. Then: You may be called upon to work at other times in exceptional cases. This may be the case, for example, if there has been a flood and you need to help clean up. If you`re under 18 and you`re moving, you`ve probably thought about finding a job.
But before you apply for whatever is in sight and dream of endless wealth, there are a few things you should probably consider. Children can only work full-time after reaching the minimum school-leaving age – they can then work up to a maximum of 40 hours per week. This equates to 28 days a year if you work five days a week. Some employers may offer more than part of your employment contract. The age of participation (the age at which you can leave education or training) has been changed to 18. Even if you work full-time, you may need to take some kind of training. This includes its 16- and 17-year-olds.
Check the government`s website to see if these new laws affect you. Babysitting: You can babysit at any age, except in Northern Ireland where you must be at least 13 years old.
